Application of this IDARS to aircraft will lower acquisition costs, provide improved system availability, lower operating costs, provide reduced weight, extend useful life of the aircraft, and provide increased safety. Our basic generic IDARS (Figure 5.1.1) provides integrated data acquisition, crash survivable cockpit voice recording, and crash survivable flight data recording in a single line replaceable unit.rnThe following table summarizes the average acquisition cost savings and average avionics weight savings obtainable by replacing a Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR), Flight Data Recorder (FDR), and a Digital Flight Data Acquisition Recorder (DFDAU) with a Smiths Industries IDARS.rnThe modular and expandable design of the IDARS architecture allows easy integration of additional functions to provide Health and Usage Monitoring System (HUMS) capability. The HUMS features provide operational cost savings with improved diagnostics and prognostics in the areas of engine health and usage monitoring as well as aircraft structural usage monitoring. For rotorcraft applications additional benefits are provided in the areas of drive train health monitoring, automatic rotor track and balance, and rotor health monitoring. The Smiths Industries IDARS incorporates the broad flexibility in modular software and hardware design critical to efficient, low cost adaptation across different aircraft types. The system maintains a maximum of commonality and a minimum of unique modification.rnThis modular approach allows the operators to chose from a variety of configurations to match their individual aircraft requirements. This unique approach provides the ability to meet the regulatory requirements for a voice and flight data recorder while providing HUMS growth capability without the need to purchase a separate LRU. Designed for both fixed and rotor wing aircraft, the SI IDARS/HUMS has been selected for the following aircraft:rn1.USAF/USN T-6A (JPATS)rn2.USAF UH-1Nrn3.USAF B-1Brn4.USAF U-2Srn5.USAF KC-135rn6.Brazil AL-X (Super Tucano)rn7.NATO Flying Training Canada (NFTC) programrn8.UK Chinook HUMSrn9.UK Sea King HUMSrn10.UK Puma HUMSrn11.Eurocopter EC.135,BO.105 & BK.117rn12.UK Lynx HUMSrnIn addition to the extensive list above, the IDARS is being competitively offered to meet a variety of other applications around the world. Rapid customer acceptance demonstrates the appeal of the SI single-box approach to meeting the rapidly changing data recording requirements facing aviation operators today. No other current system offers the flexibility of the Smiths Industries IDARS to meet such a wide range of recording requirements - CVR to HUMS in a single-box!
