This study demonstrated that natural and synthetic phosphate minerals have a high affinity for metal oxyanions including As, Se, U, Am and Pu in simulated ground water. The natural phosphate minerals were not as effective as the synthetic apatites and tri-calcium phosphate. However one of them, bone char, had excellent sorption capacity for U, Am and Pu. The studies described here were necessarily of a scoping nature and did not consider all of the variables which might affect performance of a treatment process. Other variables which could affect contaminant removal include: 1) alternative oxidation states for those contaminants with multiple oxidation states, 2) the effects of sorption kinetics and mass transfer rates on column operation, and 3) possible competition for sorption sites by other constituents including naturally occurring organic material. At present, and in the quantities used in this study the synthetic apatites are too expensive (>dollar10/g) for use as disposable sorbents for wastewater treatment. However, bone char is readily available at low cost and appears to have many characteristics which make it suitable it suitable for one-time use followed by direct disposal.
