Our studies have shown that it is possible to remove heavy metals from solution using the ferrite process. Furthermore, preferential removal of lead over cadmium and mercury may be achieved by judicious choice of chelating agents and iron dose. This paves the road for potential "mining" of effluent waste streams containing a mixture of metals. Further investigation into the preferential removal of mixed metal waste streams by in-situ magnetite formation in the presence of chelators is justified. Specifically, a wider variety of chelating agents need to be explored, as well as varying metals and metal concentrations relative to each other and to iron dose.
