This project, a very preliminary scoping study, showed that the combination of ZVI and microbiological activity can reduce a mixture contaminants including a metal (U), nitrate, and sulfate. It was further shown that incorporating the dual reductants ZVI and an organic substrate to stimulate anaerobic microbial growth can achieve reduction of high concentrations of sulfates without production of soluble sulfide species. Of special interest was the ability to reduce sulfates generally can not be reduced by ZVI alone. The principal limitations to sulfate reduction appear to be the high pH of the solution generated by the oxidation of the ZVI and, for the system considered here, the lack of a suitable organic energy source for the anaerobic bacteria. A better understanding of these constraints is needed prior to application of this process at a field site.
