This paper begins with a discussion of the physical characteristics of the laser beam as a thermal tool and the resulting technical benefits for manufacturing. For the production of clutch, transmission and powertrain components, special lasers and a tailored laser processing machine as well as an optical sensor are presented. The practical advantages of laser beam welding, in both technological and economic terms, are illustrated by the example of clutch disks for utility vehicles.
