Engineering plastics are now well-established materials in powertrain engineering and essential to fulfilling the requirements placed on the today's motor vehicles ― cheaper and lighter parts, better fuel economy, quieter and less polluting vehicles, improved styling and passenger comfort. As these requirements have got tougher, the amount of plastic used has increased. Thanks to the design freedom plastics offer, systems that were once built from discrete components can now be highly integrated. One application of major significance is the nylon intake system. This paper traces the development of such systems from the simple plastic intake manifold through to variable intake systems and onto highly complex, multi- functional intake modules. Actual production manifolds and modules will be used to demonstrate how engineering plastics have fulfilled the increasingly complex requirements being placed on engine components.
