摘要

Mercury contamination is prevalent in Indiana lakes and streams; 99% of all fish sampled in Indiana have mercury in their tissue. In addition to harming Indiana's wildlife, spills or releases of mercury endanger the health and safety of children. In 1998, Indiana had 311 mercury poisonings involving children due to exposure from thermometer breaks. In an unprecedented, cooperative action, the Indiana Regional Household Hazardous Waste Task Force and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management are working with Indiana solid waste management districts, communities, and businesses to reduce mercury contamination. Household mercury collections were established in every Indiana county (92) in the fall of 1998. Indiana residents turned in over 2100 pounds of household mercury and mercury-containing devices for recycling during the first few months of the program. A comprehensive education program that included brochures, posters, spill clean up guidance and promotional items accompanied the collections.
