In an effort to explore the concept of utilizing in-kind services from sponsoring groups to enable a pesticide collection project, a pilot collection for unwanted and unusable pesticides was conducted in the fall of 1990 in a five parish (a.k.a. counties) area in the southwestern part of Louisiana. The primary enabling sponsor was a hazardous waste disposal company having both hazardous waste landfill and incineration permitted facilities. The pilot project was conducted as a pesticide collection amnesty day with very successful results. Of more importance was the realization that the attempt of one sponsor to conduct such an effort on a statewide basis would be overwhelmed by the magnitude of services required to handle such a volume of pesticides.
