摘要

How do you reduce the use of products that end up as household hazardous waste, increase the use of safer household product alternatives, increase individual behaviors which minimize environmental health impacts, support and increase community leadership involvement in environmental decision-making and do all this with citizens that have been traditionally under-served by environmental programs? How do you define "cost-effective" and "customer incentives" in working with communities that do not fall into the white, middle class mainstream? These were questions put forth at the first planning meeting of staff from Seattle Public Utilities, The American Lung Association's Master Home Environmentalist Program, and the Community Coalition for Environmental Justice and community members of Southeast Seattle. We wanted to "think outside the box" and explore ideas that might increase our effectiveness at designing and implementing programs/messages that could better meet the needs of under-served communities in Seattle.
