Many papers have been published in recent years describing how pressure pulsations can result in machine-direction (MD) basis-weight variations if improperly attenuated. Experience gained on various fourdrinier and twin-wire newsprint machines indicates that air-padded headboxes or those with external attenuation adequately dampen pulsations above 1-2 Hz and that the latter do not generally affect MD basis-weight uniformity. However, numerous cases were found where wet-end vibrations did translate into pronounced MD basis-weight variations, particularly in the frequency range of 10-40 Hz. Case examples are given and include basis-weight variation and vibration frequency spectra. Typical pulsation levels at various locations along the stock system are included.
