Scope of this paper is to perform a Phase-A analysis on the development of a test facility in order to characterize both atomization and combustion of green propellants. FiatAvio intends, in fact, to build a test cell to study combustion behavior of these propellants in its facility in Colleferro (near Rome). Such a research cell shall be realized in the frame of the new Italian Center for Liquid Propulsion in collaboration with University of Rome "La Sapienza", Italian Space Agency and CIRA. The structure of this paper is organized in three sections: Test Facility Development Plan, Combustion Chamber Characterization and Diagnostic Issues. In the first Section, the test facility development plan is described together with main problems and features of the facility components; its layout and schematic views will also be shown. The second section deals with combustion chamber characterization in the test facility context; a class of green propellants (i.e. Methane, Alcohol) to be tested is examined including jet atomization, turbulent mixing and combustion with liquid oxygen (LOX), in both sub- and supercritical conditions. Last, the diagnostics for investigating combustion chamber phenomenology is considered; this ranges from Phase Doppler Particle Anemometry (PDPA) to Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Spectroscopy (CARS).rnCost, planning, and management issues are also considered.rnThe goal of such a joint research center will be to investigate the most critical items of a liquid rocket engine using non-toxic propellants, including injection and combustion.
