To investigate the expression and development of amyloid-13 peptide 42 (Aβ-42)in normal retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) of rats .SD rats were divided into 7 experimental groups: 3, 6, 13, 15, 25, 60, and 90 day postnatal groups and the 15 and 25 day postnatal groups were subdivided into rats exposed to light and not exposed to light groups. Cryosections and flat-mounted retina of rat eyes were used for immunocytochemistry staining. Aβ-42expression was not observed in retinal ganglion cells at 3, 6 and 13 day postnatal groups, but observed at 15 day postnatal (opening eyes on the 13th day postnatal). The number of Aβ- 42positive retinal ganglion cells increased with an increase in retinal development time, reaching a maximum at 90 day postnatal. If the rats were not exposed to light after birth, Aβ-42 expression was also not observed at 15 day postnatal group. Aβ-42 was first detected in normal rat retina ganglion cells in this paper. It suggest that Aβ-42 in rat retina may play a role in vision development.
