The design and performance of a 3.5kW switched reluctance generator, 6/4, 3-phase for automotive applications has been presented. It is found that the SRG prototype exceeds the required power above 5,000 rpm. It is also shown that the efficiency of the system is higher than the typical efficiency of the Lundell generator above 5,000 rpm. However, below 5,000 rpm the SRG does not meet the expected power. Furthermore, it is found that the poor performance at low speed is due to switching losses in the power converter and core losses in the machine. Finally, it can be concluded that the SRG technology has avenues to be investigated for improvements with a great potential for automotive generator applications.
