It has been shown that hybrids offer the best opportunity in the midterm to market vehicles with improved emissions and fuel consumption. When comparing different configurations by consideration of the energy flow, the parallel hybrid shows the most advantages. Especially with the target to offer vehicles with the same performance as conventional cars but better fuel consumption, a parallel hybrid with a more efficient engine and a small battery is the most reasonable and cost effective configuration. After a look at some new components for hybrids there are shown possibilities for hybrid cars on a VW Jetta basis. Most promising would either be a parallel hybrid with direct injection gasoline engine (FSI) to offer good performance and fuel consumption while reaching the SULEV standard, or a parallel hybrid with direct injection diesel engine (TDI) to offer outstanding fuel efficiency while still having satisfactory performance.
