A Corona Discharge Device CDD~(TM) that generates low power non-thermal plasma has been applied to the exhaust system of a Stoichiometric gasoline engine equipped with three-way catalytic converters. This CDD~(TM)-catalyst combination is shown to provide significantly superior performance to that of the catalytic converter alone. The performance of a given catalyst in the presence of the CDD~(TM) is similar to and sometimes exceeds a catalyst with double the precious metal loading. In the range investigated, the performance of the CDD~(TM) -catalyst system improves with increasing power levels. Combustion flow bench, engine dynamometer and vehicle testing has shown similarly improved performance.
