New diesel fuel injections systems, principally common rail injection systems, operate at a much higher pressure than their counterparts of recent years. The higher pressure range of any of these fuel injection systems has been shown to require a higher particulate and water removal efficiency from the fuel than previous fuel injection systems. This paper discusses why this is true, and reviews the source of these contaminants. Further discussion relates to the difficulty in removing water from pressure side systems and what causes disarming of water separating mechanisms. The value of fuel additives is reviewed as a solution to problems caused by low sulfur fuels and cold weather operation. Detergent additives that can prevent "coking" of the nozzle orifices are referenced.
