There is little doubt that laser welding has made a significant impact and gained major acceptance in select applications, such as: sheet metal tailored blanks, transmission gears, medical devices, heat exchangers, and many more. Broad industrial acceptance and hyper growth of laser welding is limited by three major factors: general lack of laser processing knowledge in the design realm, capital equipment costs (both real and perceived), and today's stringent laser related requirements such as fit and cleanliness and material compatibility. Regardless of the barriers to growth, laser welding installations over the past two years have been significant. With over 450 laser welding devices shipped in year 2000 alone we see the combined unit sales of C02 and Nd:YAG lasers earmarked specifically for laser welding increased over 40% from 1999 to 2000. We expect growth of laser welding devices to continue well in excess of 10%. Tomorrow's welding technology will most likely include "Hybrid" technology that incorporates the best of what the laser has to offer in combination with the state of the art in plasma, TIG or other conventional welding technologies. These combined technologies show promise in allowing for wider gap tolerance, increased welding speed and ultimately greater opportunity to overcome metallurgical incompatibility.
