摘要

The main natural gas reserves in Russia are located in remote areas of the Arctic regions of Siberia, in the offshore gas fields (Sakhalin Island, Kara Sea). Much of those gas fields are not yet under exploration because of high development costs and expensive gas pipeline transportation. Because of the low density it is expensive to transport natural gas by pipeline. A possible solution to the problem might be a chemical conversion of natural gas to dimethyl ether - alternative diesel fuel - directly on a gas field with its further delivering to consumers in Europe and Asia by using more economical liquid transport systems (conventional tankers and railroads). A feasibility study of the large-scale dimethyl ether process development, which includes production of dimethyl ether at the natural gas field site and its transportation to West Europe, demonstrates that dimethyl ether is competitive to conventional fuels.
