This paper describes the results of the implementation of an advanced system of diagnosis, designed for the supervision of industrial flames. This basically consists of two novel monitoring techniques: flame imaging with a CCD camera and a microphone for the measurement of the pressure oscillations, both with the purpose of characterising the behaviour of the combustion process in this type of flames. Different operation conditions have been tested in order to identify different combustion regimes, leading to significant changes in flame stability and emissions. The main idea is to use both the geometric characteristics of the digitized images and the pressure acoustic spectrum of the flames as an indicator of the combustion process. This information opens new possibilities in terms of detection of undesirable situations and optimisation of the process through the control of the burner settings.
