Within the scope of a research project supported by the German Association of Gas and Water Specialists (DVGW) and by the German Environmental Funding Organization (DBU) for several years a HVAC - system has been investigated at the Department of Thermodynamic of Technical University Hamburg-Harburg (TUHH) whereby the heat dissipated by a small gas engine is used to pre-dry the air by means of a desiccant wheel while the chiller is powered by the gas engine. Now a demonstration plant was built in Hamburg. The project shows that even in moderate climates the combination of a small gas engine driving a compression chiller with a desiccant wheel opens new possibilities for the design of gas driven air conditioning systems. It is possible to use a soil heat exchanger for the reduction of the supply air temperature since the air has not to be cooled down under the dew point. Such a system shows significant ecological and economical benefits.
