This paper presents the results of a study concerning the use of the infrared absorption method for the determination of superior calorific values and Wobbe numbers in industrial applications. The methane number sensor using the principle of infrared absorption already developed by Ruhrgas was taken as a starting point for the study. The feasibility study showed that superior calorific value and Wobbe number could be calculated with a measurement uncertainty lower than +/- 1 % under laboratory conditions (i.e. constant pressure and temperature) on the basis of two-channel measurements using IR signals with pass bands of 3.5 and 7.9 urn. Measurement uncertainties lower than +/- 2 % are expected for complete measurement units designed for field use. The measurement system can be realized using components available on the market. The last tests within the project were already carried out on a measurement unit similar to a prototype.
