Gas utility companies are actively looking to reduce the cost and improve the quality of maintenance in their networks of natural gas pipelines. A novel diode laser-based remote gas sensor operating as a long-path, topographic target-return lidar is described. The system is based on the principle of wavelength modulation spectroscopy at the wavelength of 1651 nm, which coincides with a strong overtone absorption line of methane. The experimental results suggest that diode laser-based lidars, especially those that benefit from the use of a fiberoptic amplifier to boost the output power of the transmitter, offer adequate detection sensitivity, spectral coverage, and technology maturity to make remote field measurements of trace gases practical. As a case in point, a mobile, field-ready system has been built and demonstrated specifically for the detection of gas leaks in underground transport and distribution gas pipelines.
