Natural gas is transported from the offshore gas fields in the North-Sea to the Statpipe NGL extraction plant at Karste through a high pressure dense gas pipeline. The gas is dried offshore to pipeline specification by use of TEG (three-ethylene glycol) absorption. Due to carry-over of TEG offshore and condensation of TEG in the pipeline, operational problems have been experienced at the Karste plant. The problems have been related to degradation of a molecular sieve unit in the plant and to reduction of recovery due to fouling of heat exchangers. The transport mechanism for TEG in the dense gas phase is not well known. It is anticipated that TEG is carried through the pipeline both as small droplets or aerosol, as film at the wall and as solved component in the gas. A test unit has been developed and several types of adsorbents, silica gel, activated alumina and molecular sieve, have been tested. The TEG concentration in the gas has been measured by use of a new ATD-GC technique (Automatic Thermal Desorption). Based on the different tests, silica gel has been selected as adsorbent. A multi-layer bed with silica gel and molecular sieve is proposed in order to remove TEG from the natural gas before entering the NGL extraction unit.
