摘要

In a project sponsored by the New York Gas Group, Edison Welding Institute has demonstrated and tested a weld zone inspection method (WZIM) capable to assess the quality of PE butt joints using simple and cost-effective means. The concept of the WZIM is based on exposing and inspecting the weld zone and interpreting butt fusion joint images to assess joint quality. The assessment results generated by the WZIM can provide sufficient grounds to accept or reject particular joints and to revise fusion equipment settings. Initial results indicate that the method demonstrated to be sensitive in differentiating between welds made under standard and non-standard conditions and the method's sensitivity was verified by results of destructive tests accepted by the industry.
