The paper discusses specific features of the construction and operation of gas wells in permafrost, the conditions of permafrost spread and its characteristic features in the north of Western Siberia, the thickness of permafrost over large gas deposits in the Pur-Nadym region and gives a schematic map of permafrost over gas deposits in the Pur-Nadym region. The paper also analyzes the dynamics of migration of the phase transition boundary around the gas well during its construction, conservation and operation. Analytical expressions are given to determine the time of the onset of thawing, the rate of thawing zone spread and reverse freezing in the presence of thermal resistance of the wellbore, derived within the framework of thermal balance technique. The paper also analyzes techniques of thermal and thermal erosion effect on permafrost in the process of drilling a well and the techniques of protecting wells from the effect of phase transitions during drilling and operation of wells. In particular a formula was developed for selecting admissible temperature of the drilling mud, which leaves permafrost intact. The paper also discusses the problem of controlling hydrates during the operation of gas wells in the North. It also substantiates the use of thermally insulated gathering lines to prevent hydrate formation.
