Expected sound emissions from natural gas plants must already be taken into account in the preliminary planning and public approval stages and must be verified by acoustic reports produced by independent experts. In special cases, it may be necessary to localize individual sound sources precisely and to assess their intensity during the final official inspection of the plant following construction. One of the major requirements is the evaluation of noise levels at remote points, i.e. the assessment of the acoustic impression created by a plant at a certain distance. With conventional integral measurement methods, this is an extremely difficult and complex process. Research carried out by Ruhrgas Aktiengesellschaft with a new selective sound measurement method has convincingly demonstrated that it is possible to allocate sound emissions to the emission sources relevant for a remote point at a considerable measurement distance. This measurement method will be especially important for identifying cost-effective sound absorbing measures for the extension of plants already operated at the admissible sound emission limits.
