The Gas Technology Institute (GTI) has conceptualized, designed, fabricated, and extensively laboratory-evaluated a Forced Internal Recirculation (FIR) Burner for use with composite radiant U-tubes manufactured by Schunk-Inex. The combination of both technologies results in a high-performance, efficient, and low-emissions combustion system for the heat-treating industry. This paper discusses the findings associated with test-firing the GTI 75-kW FIR Burner with the Schunk-Inex Si-SiC U-tube, which resulted in a temperature uniformity across the working surface of the radiant tube of less than ±25 K. In additional, NOx emissions, at a furnace temperature of 1280 K and combustion air preheat of 725 K, were found to be < 70 vppm with negligible CO content in the flue gases.
