Frequently, investigations focusing on improvements in gas flow metering benefit from detailedrnknowledge of velocity distribution characteristics upstream from meters. In this paper, a conceptrnis presented that provides the desired information using hot film / hot wire anemometry. In orderrnto generate technically meaningful results, hot film measurements have to be performed underrnfield test conditions. This poses two major problems: positioning of probes inside pressurisedrnpipelines and probe calibration in a well defined flow at physical conditions that will be found inrnsubsequent tests. For probe positioning two different devices were developed, one for fieldrnapplication and a second, more elaborate one for use in high-pressure test facilities. The latterrntraversing rig allows the three-dimensional velocity vector to be measured at any location in piperncross sections. Results obtained with the two rigs are presented. In addition, the conceptrndeveloped for probe calibration is discussed.
