Gas interchangeability deals with the issue of whether gases of different composition will give acceptable combustion performance on gas appliances, usually of the domestic, naturally aerated kind. Typical changes are gas dilution or enrichment, addition of peak shaving gases, use of synthetic natural gases.rnVarious models have been devised to predict gas interchangeability, but all of the ones in use are empirically based. The rules were derived from tests on selected burners, and apply only to the appliance stock existing at that time. In this paper, models have been developed from existing burner laws and simple flame property theories, with the aim of providing a technique that has universal applicability. The upper Wobbe limit is linked to incomplete combustion and lower Wobbe to flame lift. In addition to changes in gas composition the models deal with variation in primary aeration, supply pressure and oxygen depletion.
