A methodology for the optimization of process parameters in drilling based on the on-line tuning of empirical models is developed. A relationship between tool wear and spindle power is employed to estimate wear rates and drive parameter selection decisions involving cycle time and tool life constraints. Tool wear coefficients are updated based on the power-wear model and used to facilitate multiple updates of process parameters within a single tool wear cycle. Upon tool replacement, wear measurements are used as additional feedback for both the tool-wear model and power-wear relationship. The feasibility of simultaneously tuning models while optimizing process parameters and the effect of the two levels of model feedback on algorithm convergence is explored through a series of drilling experiments with 304 stainless steel.
