An experimental investigation was made to study the finish machining characteristics of a silicon carbide particle reinforced magnesium metal matrix composite (SiC_p/Mg MMC). Facing tests were conducted with process variables including feed, cutting speed, depth of cut and inclination angle; while performance measurements were the cutting forces involved, chip formation, surface roughness and tool wear. It was found that the dominant tool wear mechanism was abrasive wear. Within the range of experimental conditions, the cutting speed had very little effect on the cutting forces. A greater depth of cut produced a greater volume of material removed for a given amount of tool wear. The chips formed were sawtooth, semi-continuous chips. Surface roughness values were within the range of 0.2 - 3.0 μm.
