摘要

Surface oxide films on metallic materials play an important role not only as an inhibitor of corrosion but also as a factor governing biocompatibility. In this paper, the composition of surface oxide film on metallic biomaterials and their change in human body were reviewed with empirical data. Metal ion dissolution from the materials was also considered. In particular, preferential release of specific elements from materials under wear was considered. Released metal ions do not always combine with biomolecules to appear toxicity because active ion immediately combine with a water molecule or an anion near the ion to form an oxide, hydroxide, salt, or complex. In addition, surface modification techniques to improve corrosion and wear resistances and bone conductivity were reviewed. Effect of calcium ion implantation into titanium for improvement of its bone conductivity is given as an example.
