Bioactive ceramic layer could be easily coated on a newly developed β-type titanium alloy Ti-29Nb-13Ta-4.6Zr by using calcium phosphate glass powders containing small amounts of Na2O and TiO_2. The joining is fine and strong because a compositionally gradient layer is developed automatically on the substrate alloy during the heating.β-Ca_3(PO_4)_2 crystalline phase is precipitated in the glass-ceramic coating layer. On being soaked SBF, bone-like hydroxyapatite was newly formed on the surface of the coating. This phenomenon implies a possibility that the calcium phosphate glass-ceramic coated on the alloy shows bioactivity in living body.
