Continuous variation of arrival pressures and flows throughout the life of South Morecambe Field necessitated defining an operating envelope for centrifugal compressor selection in addition to the rated point required by API617. The operating envelope defined the range of maximum and minimum flows and associated heads, which will vary during the years 2001 -2004. South Morecambe Onshore compressors were optimised to maximise flow deliverability to meet peak gas demands. However, the selection process took due account of operational flexibility ensuring that the compressor will avoid recycle and operate within the most efficient part of their performance map. Active management of compression facilities adds significant value to the South Morecambe Asset. The installation of the SMOC compressors helped to raise the maximum production capacity by 350 mmscfd and extended the life of the asset. Operational flexibility was achieved with the field able to operate between its maximum capacity of 40 mscmd (1411 mmscfd) and a minimum of 5 mscmd (176 mmscfd) i.e. a turn down ratio of 8:1.
