The Computer Aided Bearing Design and Analysis program will be an interactive program used by students to size and select bearings and components. The program is designed to follow the manufacturers recommended sizing procedure shown in the manufacturers catalogue. The software simplifies the simplifies the learning process of sizing a ball bearing by taking the user through step by step. The program will be used in two Machine Elements courses. It will give the students an opportunity to size many different bearing applications quickly and easily. It also will reinforce bearing design principles and analytical techniques that are used in sizing a bearing. The program can also be used in an industrial environment where machine designers are sizing single row ball bearings. The program goes one step further than a spreadsheet program. It allows the user to look at pictures, graphs, tables, and charts to view information or to select a value needed in the calculations. This allows students to view specifications for the bearing from the computer. This program is part of a series of Machine Elements programs written in visual basic. The Bearing Design program will be introduced to the students the next time the course is taught. Other programs are also in the works to be introduced at a later time. I am in the process of organizing the programs into a manual. This would assist in the use of the programs plus include problems to solve with the programs. While the other programs have not been used extensively, I have had positive results. Students are very comfortable using the computer and getting information from the computer. The software reinforces the procedure learned in the classroom. Students would like to have full access to the software, but at this point it is not available. I am in the process of making the software available and would like to have something by the next time the course is taught. I will be teaching a 300 level Machine Elements course where I will be able to use the bearing program in the course and get more feedback from the students.
