RMS is conceptually designed to incorporate the benefit of high capacity of DML and adaptability of FMS in the rapidly changing market condition in a mass-production environment. In this study, we validate the design concept of RMS and indicate the advantage of RMS over DML in numerous aspects. First, we show that under our conservative assumption about the reusability of RMS, it requires DML to have a rather high reusability factor (around 47% reusable) comparing with the current standard (only about 20%.) We also indi- cate that the faster the market condition changes, i.e. shorten product life-cycle, RMS becomes more favorable; however, too short of the product life-cycle would not always benefits the firm due to constantly investing in installation and ramp-up costs. Finally, we show that it requires DML to have higher reusability factor when products change more often to be comparable with RMS in economic sense. There are still severa 1 issues of economic benefits of RMS left unexplored. For instance, the effects of life-cycle cost and convertibility to the investment decision in DML and RMS was studied in (Birge et a . 1998). Additionally, scalability of RMS, i.e., the ability of RMS to response quickly to the changes of demand volume over time, also has been studied in the ERC/RMS for years We hope this study would provide executives of a production firm the justification of higher investment cost of RMS over DML and use a more relevant investment criterion to mi ke investment decision.
