High Power Diode Laser Systems (HPDL) are ideal for heat-treating power train components. These systems can provide a case depth of 0.060" or less with significantly less distortion than induction heating techniques and at competitive speeds. A simple feedback loop employing a pyrometer can produce a consistent case depth by accurately controlling the surface temperature during the process. This paper will discuss how to use HPDL systems for heat-treating and the advantages.
