Creep-Resistant Magnesium Alloys, a Solution to Saving Weight in Automotive Powertrain

Several new magnesium alloys for high temperature applications were recently developed with the intention to achieve an adequate combination of different properties such as creep resistance, castability, mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and affordable cost. Unfortunately, this combination of properties is hard to get and evidently most of the new alloys can only address part of the required properties and performances. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the current status of the newly developed alloys and, in parallel, to explain the complexity of magnesium alloy development for powertrain applications. The paper will also demonstrate schematically the effect of alloying elements on properties and cost. This will serve to distinguish the position of each new alloy in the space of combined properties and cost.
