The chip formation of gray, nodular and compacted graphite iron (CGI) is examined in microstructural detail to better understand the machining advantages and difficulties of these irons. The resulting physical and chemical effects from the chip formation process are discussed relative to cutting tools, machine tools and part components design. The Lamb Technicon CGI High Speed Machining process is introduced with the re-developed Rotary tool technology. Lastly the economic implication of this 'one order of magnitude' machining improvement is evaluated.
