A technology demonstrator based on a Ford Focus has been equipped with a range of new driveline technologies that all interact and utilize a 5kW Integrated Starter-Generator (ISG). This vehicle has been developed as a demonstrator that allows the evaluation of the components used, as well as an identification of all the technologies needed to successfully reduce the fuel consumption of high volume passenger cars. The other objectives are reduced NVH levels and an assessment of the expected customer acceptance of stop/start functionality. This paper gives an overview of the development process from specification to the test and evaluation. This includes the specification of the components, based on driveline fuel consumption simulation results and a package study. Furthermore, this paper focuses on the interaction and functions of the ISG with regard to utilization of the storage system.
