Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) has designed, developed, and implemented a complete telematics-based instrumentation system for Ford Motor Company's Electric Hybrid Escape Vehicle (HEV) program. Using SAIC-developed telematics technology, SAIC engineers have designed and installed vehicle instrumentation systems in HEVs to remotely monitor and analyze powertrain and instrumentation performance. The telematics technology provides early insight into the engineering process, which can translate into a better understanding of how to effect positive change, avoid unnecessary cost increases, and reduce the impact of schedule delays. The collected data are critical to the fine-tuning of the HEV powertrain. The telematics aspect of the program notifies Ford and SAIC of vehicle and instrumentation performance, location which is critical to keeping the vehicles on the road and the engineers at their desks. Figure 1 illustrates the completed Ford HEV instrumentation system. The system is comprised of a self-powered telematics enabled instrumentation system mounted on the load deck of the vehicle, an in-vehicle laptop computer for real-time system monitoring, and a data center that provides real-time vehicle monitoring and secure data dissemination to Ford engineers using the ANX~R Network.
