Increasing vehicle content and fuel economy continue to drive the need for higher voltage electrical systems. As a practical matter, the European vehicle community (Forum Bordnetz) settled on 42V as the highest multiple of the standard 14V system that ought to be provided in vehicles without shock hazard protection. Further analysis indicates that the increased voltage potential of the 42V PowerNet does call for some additional features designed to manage risk levels at or near those of a vehicle with a low voltage system. Also, by removing the constraint of using a whole number multiple of standard PbA battery modules to achieve the desired working voltage, the operating voltage range of the 42V PowerNet can be extended to improve the power capability of a given size battery, without the need for even more high voltage safety features. This paper addresses the safety, performance and cost implications of extending the 42V PowerNet working voltage range.
