Low transmission noise and vibration are not only essential to a comfortable driving experience, but are also perceived to be quality/durability indicators. Current state technology is not mature enough to determine the influence of manufacturing variation on noise and vibration. Hence, empirical methods must be employed to determine the relationship between manufacturing variation and the noise and vibration performance. Noise and vibration originating from a Ravigneaux type planetary gear set is studied in this paper. Specifically, variation in gear tooth lead, misalignment due to carrier pinion shaft hole location and parallelism, pinion shaft retention, bearing clearance, carrier stiffness, and the design of center shaft are considered. The sound pressure level due to the Ravigneaux planetary gearset is measured in an acoustic hemi-cell along with drive shaft torsional acceleration and the extension housing acceleration in X, Y, and Z directions. Recommendations based on the trends identified from the analysis of this data are also presented.
