摘要

The development of new automatic transmissions with higher number of speeds and larger overall ratios leads to the possibility of using a friction launch device as an alternative to a torque converter. Potential benefits of friction launch include lower mass, lower cost, improved packaging, and better fuel economy. This paper will discuss possible embodiments of a wet clutch as the launch device as well as some possible applications. The tradeoffs between friction launch and a torque converter will also be discussed.
