Improved performance and reduced prices have been the stimulus for the proliferation of personal computers. Together with continuous development of software tools, the availability of powerful personal computers places a number of modeling tools at the disposal of every engineer. Therefore today there is no question as to whether modeling is to be applied on not; the real question is what type of modeling should be used. To this end, a number of basic concepts for the modeling of powder metallurgy processes will be discussed and the primary models (continuum, micromechanical, and discrete) will be reviewed. In addition, consideration is given to: the need to balance model complexity and the amount of work for calibration experiments; the requirement for critical assessment and refinement of continuum models via experimental validation; further enhancement of continuum models on the basis of micromechanical and atomistic considerations; addressing modeling and numerical issues related to realistic complex shapes; and specific needs for further model development.
