In this paper we present a general overview of constitutive models which describe the deformation of particulate materials. Incremental and deformation plasticity models are described which have either been developed empirically or from an understanding of internal micromechanical processes. These models are evaluated in the context of Powder Metallurgical processing routes and their ability to describe the material response during stress histories which are typical of those experienced during closed-die compaction and ejection is critically assessed. Experimental procedures are described for the evaluation of the constitutive response. Areas where additional research is required in order to develop models which are capable of providing reliable process information in an industrial environment are described.
