Experimental and theoretical studies of die filling are presented. Experiments have been conducted using a model shoe filling system consisting of transparent dies and shoe. The entire test system is contained in a vacuum chamber, allowing tests to be conducted in air or vacuum. The arrangement of powder in the shoe and the details of the flow process into the die have been recorded using a highspeed video system. Experimental studies are presented which examine the influence of powder morphology and density, shoe kinematics, air flow and die shape on the filling process. Discrete element simulations of the experimental studies, which take into account the irregular particle shapes, are presented. The experimental and theoretical studies provide insight into the kinematics and mechanisms of the filling process.
