Shaping of powders through cold pressing involves adjustment of the pressing equipment to achieve the requested quality of the final product. It is important to find the appropriate tool design and tool motion. This can be a delicate task which traditionally requires several trail and error pressing cycles. Such work could be reduced by the use of modern computational tools. The current paper concerns simulation of metal powder compaction by means of the finite element (FE) method. Compaction of an axisymmetric test component has been used to compare results from two and three dimensional models. The complexity of the analysed component has been increased to approach a more typical three dimensional application. The analyses include large deformations, non-linear material behaviour and sliding contact with friction. The results show the potential in using FE based simulation of powder compaction for industrial applications.
