This paper presents a model for effective management ofrnnatural gas storage in salt caverns. An interactive and dynamicrnphenomenological inventory model is developed thatrnconsiders the effects of hydrocarbon thermodynamics, phasernbehavior, and heat and mass exchanges along cavern wallsrnduring gas loading, storage and unloading. The model predictsrncavern behavior and accounts for gas ballooning, losses due tornporous characteristics and leaky salt formation fractures,rnvariation of temperature and pressure, vapor and liquidrncomposition changes and cavern volume change due to saltrncreep. The model consists of a set of coupled nonlinearrnalgebraic and differential equations, for which the solution asrna function of time is obtained by numerical means. Therncapabilities of the proposed model are demonstrated byrnanalyses of several field scenarios. The dynamic response ofrnthe cavern-well assemblage to injection and production cyclesrnis simulated.
