The need for more durable P/M automotive parts, especially in the powertrain, has increased as these parts have become smaller and as higher load than ever before are being applied to achieve higher performance and better fuel efficiency. Several new technologies have been developed to meet this need Warm compaction is one of these technologies. However, few automotive parts have as yet been developed using this technology. In particular, no engine parts have been developed to date. We have previously reported a warm-compacted and normal temperature sintered sprocket of the roller chain system for non-DIG (direct injection gasoline) engines at the International Conference PM2000 in Kyoto. This study looks at the combination of warm compaction and high-temperature sintering. The report also examines the mechanical properties and wear resistance of warm-compacted materials. We then describe how we developed warm-compacted and high-temperature sintered P/M sprockets for the silent chain system of DIG engines, which typically exhibit very severe wear. The potential of several new high-strength P/M materials are also examined.
